Preheat oven to 180°C, 350°F or gas mark 4. Line and grease a large cake tin with cooking paper. Melt the butter and golden syrup in a large saucepan. Add the sugar and beat until creamy. Sift the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Mix the baking soda and milk separately. Fold the butter and milk mixes through the dry ingredients. Pour into a lined cake tin. Bake for 1 to 1¼ hours.
